Do You Need To Be Chinese?

The Chinese figure-hugging dress, the cheongsam or qipao was first created in the 1920s in Shanghai. It was modelled after Manchurian dress. The simpler, more conservative varieties were first worn by students and intellectuals. The more elaborate designs were worn by women from the upper class. Today’s cheongsam has reached the masses, but can Westerners look good in it? You be the judge.
